It was Independence Day in Cape Verde over the weekend, with a range of celebrations across the Island.
The archipelago was first discovered by Portuguese explorers and colonized during in the 15th century, which was the first European settlement in the tropics.
Cape Verde gained its independence in 1975 and has flourished into one of the world’s hottest tourist destinations. In fact, tourism has been the main source of growth in Cape Verde, with visitor numbers increasing by 268% between 2000 and 2012, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC).
